MANILA, Philippines — Former communications assistant secretary Mocha Uson announced yesterday that she would seek an elective position in the May 2019 elections.

Uson made the announcement a week after she resigned as assistant secretary, which she described as a sacrifice to pave the way for the approval of the proposed budget of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO).

“Yes, I will run because if someone like me is being maligned just like that, what will happen to those who have no voice? So ordinary Filipinos must have a voice,” Uson said in Filipino.

The former Malacañang official, who reportedly has millions of followers in her various social media accounts, was referring to a report that she did not resign but was fired by President Duterte.

When asked whether she would run for the Senate or the House, Uson said: “I don’t know yet but surely I will run.”

When she announced her resignation during Senate deliberations on the proposed PCOO budget last week, Uson indicated that she might run for senator or congresswoman to “supposedly bring her fight for ordinary Filipinos in Congress.”

At the same event, she said she would weigh the clamor of her followers on whether to seek elective post or not.

She admitted that the possibility of running for public office was discussed with Duterte, whom she said left her to decide on the matter.

“If it will come, it will come. But for now, I’m with the ordinary people in crushing the trapos, shameless politicians, credit grabbers and trapoliticos whose time must end,” Uson said, referring to traditional politicians.
