MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo refuted the country’s top cop’s claim that her hometown Naga City is the fifth city outside Metro Manila with the highest incidence of crimes.

“Totally unacceptable. Spare our people and our beloved city from misinformation,” Robredo said in a Twitter post on Friday.

Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that Naga City is a “hotbed” of shabu, or methamphetamines. This was contested by the vice president and the Naga City Council.

Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Albayalde said the crime incidence in Naga—such as robbery and crime against properties—indicates the existence of drug users in the city.

The police chief added that the president has a “choice” if he considers Naga City as a hotbed.

In a separate tweet also on Friday, Robredo said: “PNP Chief claims Naga consistently ranked 5th in crime volume all over the country. The truth: Murder-34th; Homicide -24th-26th; Rape-29th; Robbery-11th; Theft-6th.”

Naga City officials issued a resolution dated August 17 expressing indignation over Duterte’s claim. They said Naga has continually implemented an anti-drug abuse campaign.

Meanwhile, lawyer Barry Gutierrez, Robredo’s spokesperson, said the target of Duterte’s tirades against Naga is the vice president.

“If she is the target, she is ready, but [Naga] should not be dragged into this because many people have put their stake here, many people have benefitted from the efficient administration of the city,” Gutierrez said.
