Police reinstates Trillanes' security escort
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has reinstated its personnel assigned to escort opposition Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.
The senator earlier revealed that all his security escorts from both the police and the military were removed last month.
"This morning the PNP personnel were returned or were reassigned to me," Trillanes said in an interview with Karen Davila on ANC's "Headstart."
Trillanes, a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, clarified that he never complained about the recall of his security detail.
A few days ago, Trillanes asked the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to reconsider its decision to pull out his security escorts. According to the senator, no explanation was given when his security escorts were pulled out last month.
The senator further noted that he did not have security detail from the Senate but expressed that he appreciates the police and the military for providing him with security escorts.
"If I requested just the same and the fact that the AFP then and the PNP provided me with security detail, I appreciated that because it gives me at least some sense of security and that would help me in my work so that I won't hold back," Trillanes said.
Trillanes added that he is not the only senator with police or military escorts but refused to give further details.
With the rising number of local government officials being killed, Trillanes said that now is not the time to pull out security from government officials.
"Normally, you wouldn't need security if there's peace and order across the land," he said.
The PNP earlier said Trillanes' security escorts were pulled out for a comprehensive review of the deployment of officers. The AFP, on the other hand, said the recalled soldiers' tour of duty already lapsed. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
