US most trusted country by Filipinos — poll
MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos trust the United States more than its strategic rivals, China and Russia, results of a new Pulse Asia poll showed.
“The US, Japan and Australia, as well as the ASEAN and the United Nations are trusted by a plurality to a significant majority of Filipinos,” Pulse Asia said in a June 15-21 poll commissioned by think tank Stratbase ADR Institute for Strategic and International Studies.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has made a stunning shift in his nation’s foreign policy since assuming office in June 2016, as he cozies up to China and Russia while berating traditional treaty ally and former colonial master, the US.
In the same Pulse Asia survey, China got an overall trust rating of 17 while Russia scored 10.
Meanwhile, the European Union, which has been critical of President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly drug war, got a total trust score of 7. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
