‘Dengvaxia scaring public from vaccination’

Bebot Sison Jr. - The Philippine Star

IBA, Zambales, Philippines  — People are losing their trust in other immunization programs of the government and are scared of other vaccines because of the Dengvaxia controversy, Sen. JV Ejercito said yesterday.

“The hysteria and sensationalization of the Dengvaxia issue have caused our people to lose trust in other vaccines, which is both sad and alarming,” Ejercito said.

Ejercito, who chairs the Senate committee on health, said this could result in the country facing an epidemic soon.

He said the country has already experienced outbreaks of measles and other diseases, but people should separate the Dengvaxia issue from other immunization projects to protect themselves.

Ejercito visited Zambales, particularly President Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Hospital (PRMMH), to see for himself what health facilities in the province need in terms of infrastructure and assistance from the government.

As he visited PRMMH, he lamented that the 150-bed capacity hospital accommodates some 250 to 300 patients.

The senator promised PRMMH funding for additional 250 beds to avoid overcapacity.
