LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines — There is no more time for the Senate to pass legislation for the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled on May 14, Sen. JV Ejercito said yesterday.

Ejercito, who spoke before students of Pangasinan State University here, said the Senate will go on break this coming Wednesday “unless the President certifies the measure as urgent.”

“So that’s the only way that we can act on it but we have not yet received any (advice). We’re waiting for it,” he said.

Ejercito said he believes this is a sign the elections would push through as scheduled.

He said the barangay and SK elections have been postponed twice and people might say it would already be too long a wait.

“If the President says so, then why not? It would be justified if there is really a reason,” he said.

One of the principal authors of the SK Reform Law, Ejercito said he is excited having introduced the anti-political dynasty provision.

He said this would be the first time that it would be applied “so I’m also excited if we become effective and successful in this then probably it’s about time that we can pursue it in a bigger political spectrum.”

He said there are better programs now for the youth who would be elected, which include leadership and entrepreneurship training.

The House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms has approved on second reading a bill seeking postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to Oct. 8, 2018.
