MANILA, Philippines — Nearly three of five Filipino adults would choose to succeed in their careers instead of having love lives, a Social Weather Stations survey showed.

The survey released a day before the celebration of Valentine’s Day, found out that 59 percent of Filipinos picked succeeding in their career, while 41 percent chose love life.

More singles, regardless of sex, would also prioritize career over love life.

“In general, majorities of 60 percent among women and 57 percent among men choose career over love life,” the polling firm said.

Among single men, 82 percent of those who are widowed, separated or divorced and 77 percent of those who never married would choose career over love life—higher compared to 53 percent among those with live-in partners and 50 percent among married people who would choose the same.

Among single women, 83 percent of those who never married and 80 percent of those who are widowed, separated or divorced would prioritize their jobs over love compared to 65 percent among those with live-in partners and 49 percent among married people.

Juggling love life, career

The same survey also showed that 84 percent of the respondents believe it is possible to succeed in love life and career at the same time.

Of this proportion, 58 percent answered “definitely possible,” 26 percent “somewhat possible,” five percent “somewhat impossible” and three percent “definitely impossible.”

This yielded a net possibility score of +76 or “very strong.”

Sixty-six percent of respondents, who are mostly living with partners and are married, said they have experienced successful careers and love lives at the same time.

In terms of sex, 68 percent of men and 63 percent of women had successful careers and love lives.

The survey was conducted from December 8 to 16 last year using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults.

It has sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
