18 areas under signal no. 1 as LPA intensifies into tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area off Surigao del Sur, which has developed into a tropical depression, begins to threaten 16 areas Monday.

PAGASA said the tropical depression ‘Agaton’ was located 175 kilometers east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 4 p.m. It is expected to move west at 19 kilometers per hour.

Agaton, the first storm of the year, packs a maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kilometers per hour.

Agaton may make a landfall over Caraga Monday evening or early Tuesday early morning.

Signal number one is hoisted over the following areas:

  • Surigao del Norte
  • Siargao Island
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Dinagat Island
  • Agusan del Norte
  • Agusan del Sur
  • Davao Oriental
  • Davao del Norte
  • Davao del Sur
  • North Cotabato
  • Compostela Valley
  • Misamis Occidental
  • Misamis Oriental
  • Lanao del Norte
  • Lanao del Sur
  • Camiguin
  • Bukidnon
  • Southern Leyte

“Moderate to heavy rains is expected over Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao particularly in the regions of Eastern Visayas, Caraga and Davao. Residents of these areas must undertake precautionary measures against possible flooding and landslides and coordinate with their respective local disaster risk reduction and management,” the state weather bureau said.

It was forecast to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday.

PAGASA warned that sea travel is risky over the areas under signal number one. Seaboards of Northern Luzon and Southern Luzon, eastern seaboard of Central Luzon and eastern and western seaboard of Visayas are also dangerous due to northeast monsoon.
