Palace: Gov't work, classes in all levels suspended on October 16

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED 1:14 p.m.)— Malacañang on Sunday announced the suspension of government work and classes in all levels nationwide on October 16, Monday, due to the two-day transport strike.
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the cancellation of classes was made by the Office of Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
“As to suspension of government work, we shall issue the usual memorandum circular,” the Palace said.
Andanar said the private sector would not be covered, adding that suspension of work is subject to the discretion of employers.

Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno also made a separate announcement of suspension of court works nationwide.

The Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) and Stop and Go Coalition earlier announced that they would be joining the transport strike to protest the government’s plan to phase out jeepneys aged 15 years and older.
Other major transport groups earlier said they would not be joining the transport strike. These are the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP), Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO), Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas (LTOP), Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (ALTODAP) and Pangkalahatang Sanggunian Manila and Suburbs Drivers Association (PASANG MASDA).
Last Friday, a number of local government units already declared suspension of classes in the light of the scheduled transport strike.
