LA TRINIDAD, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa said there is no need to continue the nationwide gun ban and to conduct checkpoints in the country.

Dela Rosa, who was the guest during the 116th Police Service anniversary of the Cordillera police, said: "Based on the Omnibus election code, there is no need to continue on with Comelec gun ban and checkpoint since the president has already signed the postponement of the barangay and SK elections for next year.”

Republic Act No. 10952, signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, moved the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to May 2018. Incumbent local officials were ordered to remain in office.

"It will all depend on a case to case basis if the ground commander sees the need to continue on with the conduct of checkpoints to maintain peace and order in their area of coverage," the top cop said.

Dela Rosa said he supports Duterte’s postponement of barangay and SK polls.

"If these narco-politicians in the barangay level continues on with their illegal drug activities, then definitely the police will run after those barangay captains acting as drug lords identified by our police operatives," Dela Rosa said.

"Although we value life and want every person like these incumbent barangay officials involved in the drug problem to be alive, these narco-politicians would have to face men in uniform if they would not heed our call for them to stop,” he added.
