Pardoned killer Manero arrested anew for murder charges
GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – Authorities on Friday arrested pardoned killer Norberto Manero Jr. for another murder and frustrated murder case.
Manero was sentenced to a life term for the killing in 1985 of Italian missionary Tullio Favali in Tulunan town, North Cotabato.
He was pardoned six years after he was convicted and jailed at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.
He was a commander of the defunct Civilian Home Defense Forces in Tulunan when he killed Favali in broad daylight using a World War 2 vintage .30 caliber Browning automatic rifle at a highway in the municipality on suspicion that the priest was coddling local guerrillas of the New People’s Army.
Supt. Romeo Galgo Jr., spokesman of the Police Regional Office 12, did not specify the details of Manero’s new case.
Galgo said yesterday the 71-year-old Manero was arrested by agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CDIG) based on a warrant issued by Judge Andres Lorenzo of Central Mindanao’s Regional Trial Court Branch 23.
Manero voluntarily yielded when CIDG agents arrived at his house in Barangay Dadiangas West in General Santos City to serve the warrant for his arrest, he said.
He is now in the custody of the CIDG.
