Resorts World gaming suspension lifted

MANILA, Philippines — Gaming operations of Resorts World Manila will resume Thursday after the government lifted its suspension order that followed a shooting incident that left 37 people dead.
"The company is happy to announce that the gaming areas not affected by the June 2 incident will commence operations today," Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.
Travellers International operates Resorts World in the Philippines.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) suspended Resorts World's provisional license to operate last June 9, a week after a gunman set casino tables on fire that suffocated 37 people to death.
Jessie Carlos, a disgruntled former employee of the Department of Finance, reportedly lost in casino, prompting him to burn tables, before lighting himself up.
While Newport Mall, where Resorts World is located in Pasay re-opened last June 17 after the incident, Pagcor barred the establishment to resume its gaming business, pending review of its security guidelines.
According to the disclosure, Pagcor found the management's actions to ensure "safety and security" in the casino sufficient.
"The company has taken action to address the issues in its safety and security procedures, as well as the welfare of at least 6,000-strong workforce of the company and their families whose livelihood are affected by the suspension," it said.
A congressional inquiry is being held to determine security lapses that led to the attack.
