Duterte: China can intercede between US, NoKor
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The intervention of China is needed to ease the increasing tension with North Korea’s nuclear warhead buildup, President Duterte said yesterday.
“Our greatest chance of getting some dialogue with America and North Korea would be through the intercession of China,” the President told reporters after touring one of the Chinese Navy ships docked at the Sasa Wharf for a four-day goodwill visit.
Duterte said he explained to US President Donald Trump, who called him over the weekend, that there is no way North Korea President Kim Jong-un can be scared with firepower.
“I told him we are as concerned and I supposed that you – you have the persuasive power, you are showing it to him. There has to be a sense somewhere,” he said, adding that other heads of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states have grown concerned over the situation.
The ASEAN leaders are worried that this could lead to the use of nuclear arms – a situation that would affect everyone.
“And the Philippines is within striking distance of their missiles,” Duterte said.
