January declared National Bible Month
MANILA, Philippines - Days before the feast of the Black Nazarene, President Duterte issued a proclamation declaring January as National Bible Month.
The declaration was contained in Proclamation No. 124 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on behalf of Duterte on Jan. 5.
The proclamation said while the government maintains neutrality in its treatment of all religious groups, it is not precluded from pursuing valid secular objectives even if it would have an incidental result affecting a particular sect or organization.
It noted that the 1987 Constitution calls on the government to support efforts to strengthen the ethical and spiritual values and develop the moral character of Filipinos.
National Bible Month will culminate in the last week of January, which has been declared National Bible Week.
