70 ailing political prisoners may be freed this month

Ding Cervantes, Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – At least 70 old and ailing political prisoners would be freed by the end of November once President Duterte signs the release orders, chief government peace negotiator and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said yesterday.

He said the political detainees to be released include the elderly, women and the sick.

Bello also announced that seven more consultants of the National Democratic Front would be released.

“We are just waiting for the President to sign the release orders and we are hopeful he will sign them (this week),” he added.

He said the release of political detainees shows the sincerity of the President to pursue the peace negotiations until their logical conclusion, which is a just and lasting peace.
