Duterte wants PNP placed under military control
MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte has tasked Congress to amend the current Philippine National Police (PNP) law to revert back to the defunct Philippine Constabulary, again placing the police under the control of the military.
Duterte also expressed disappointment over the change in the names and titles of policemen.
He said this confuses him every time he reads reports from the PNP and the Armed Forces.
The President said that at one point, he had to call an aide to check the meaning of AIDSOTF – the acronym for the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force. The aide also did not have any idea, Duterte said.
Duterte, 71, said he also gets confused over the ranks and titles of police officials, adding he was used to the terms used when the police were still known as the constabulary.
Police ranks now range from the lowest or police officer 1 to the highest or director general.
