MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte wants the Makati police inspector who allegedly extorts money from tourists to be relieved from duty.

During an ambush interview on Tuesday, Duterte said he received reports about the extortion activities of the cop who he did not name.

"...[R]elieve him, place him under suspension and initiate summary dismissal... or if you want at your convenience, kung sino itong inspector na ito, you better resign because as I've said... either huminto kayo or hintuin ko kayo," the president said.

The president also said it is up to erring police officers to interpret his statement that they should stop or else he will stop them.

"Do not ever think na may rango ka, na may armas ka and you feel invincible," he said.

Duterte also said that the police may also choose to be relieved of duty or be sent to Jolo or Basilan.

"Nauubusan ako ng sundalo, kailangan ko ng pulis tumulong," he said.

Duterte also mentioned a certain deputy for intelligence at the Bureau of Customs who he said he wants to have suspended immediately. He, however, did not mention the offense of the unnamed government official.

The president said that the reason why some people in government are abusing their power is because they know that the process would take too long. He said this is the reason he is ordering for the immediate removal of corrupt public officials.

He also asked the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) to focus on graft and corruption cases.

"Tutal marami naman tayo, may CIS (criminal investigation service), may pulis, I want the NBI now to focus on graft and corruption. Yun nalang muna trabaho nila," Duterte said. — Kristian Javier
