DBM chief: 100% pay hike for cops, soldiers 'doable' by 2018

MANILA, Philippines — Policemen and soldiers may expect a 100 percent salary increase by January 2018 as promised by President Rodrigo Duterte, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said on Thursday.

Diokno said that the president's promise for the uniformed service during the campaign period was "doable."

"Doable 'yun. I think maiintindihan ng mga pulis 'yan hindi naman one time 'yun. Pangako naman niya (Duterte) hindi bukas. In fact, at the present ang trajectory ko d'yan January 2018 doble na ang sweldo," Diokno told members of the press in an ambush interview.

The Budget secretary added that policemen and soldiers would receive an incremental increase in their salaries by the last quarter of this year.

"May mga movement. Hindi naman pwedeng jump ka kaagad sa gusto mo," Diokno said.

Diokno earlier told the Senate that there would be no pay hike for policemen and soldiers this month because there is no item in the 2016 national budget to cover the increase promised by Duterte.

The Budget secretary is expected to submit the proposed 2017 national budget to the president today which would then be submitted to the House of Representatives for review on Monday.
