Alvarez wants DPWH to drop construction of highways
MANILA, Philippines – Change may be coming to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH): specifically, the removal of the letter H and its transfer to the Department of Transportation (DOT).
So said Davao del Norte representative-elect Pantaleon Alvarez, president-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s choice for speaker of the House of Representatives in the 17th Congress.
In a television interview yesterday, Alvarez explained that the task of building roads or highways should be removed from the DPWH and transferred to the now emasculated DOT, which has lost half of its powers with the recent creation of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
“Highway construction should properly belong to the transportation department because transportation and roads are related. Anyway, public works is already very large,” Alvarez said.
He added that he would push for the transfer of the highways function when the House tackles the proposed streamlining of government agencies.
