PCG deputy commandant leads Undas preparations

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Coast Guard deputy commandant Rear Admiral William Melad has taken over the agency’s preparations for All Saints’ Day with the retirement of PCG commandant Admiral Rodolfo Isorena.

PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo yesterday said Isorena would step down from his post when he turns 56 years old tomorrow.

Malacañang has yet to name Isorena’s replacement.

“Admiral Melad might have to act as officer-in-charge unless President Aquino appoints someone else,” Balilo said.

Melad has taken over the PCG’s preparations for the expected exodus of travelers during the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which fall on a Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Melad ordered PCG units to set up passenger assistance desks at the seaports.

The PCG will be placed on heightened alert from Oct. 28 to Nov. 3 in anticipation of higher volume of passengers, Balilo said.

While Nov. 2 was not declared a holiday, Balilo said some people might extend their vacation in the provinces.

Balilo said the PCG would continue to perform its duties even in the absence of a new commandant.
