Death toll rises to 54 as 'Seniang' weakens into LPA

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical Depression "Seniang" weakened into a low pressure area (LPA) on New Year's eve while the number of its fatalities rose to 54.

The state weather bureau said the LPA that was previously Seniang was located at 4 a.m. today at 210 kilometers south southeast of Puerto Princesa City.

In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the 54 deaths were reported in Central and Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga and Davao regions.

Forty people were injured while seven went missing.

The final storm to hit the Philippines in 2014, Seniang affected 486,512 people in seven regions while triggering 17 flooding and 12 landslide incidents.

Seniang also damaged 1,533 houses and caused P4.9 million damage to agriculture.

Thirty-eight roads and 20 bridges remain non-passable in the Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Caraga regions.

Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Agusan del Sur and Suriago del Norte are also still experiencing power outages.
