The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang confirmed yesterday reports that the Department of National Defense (DND) had acquired spy gadgets.

Speaking to reporters, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said: “According to the DND, the equipment that was procured is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program, and will be used primarily in the campaign against terrorism.”

DND acting public affairs chief Arsenio Andolong said the radio frequency test equipment (RFTE) would not be used to spy on critics of the administration.

The contract for the project was signed last Feb. 4 and the equipment is due for delivery this August, he added. – Delon Porcalla, Alexis Romero, Jose Rodel Clapano
