CHR pursuing complaints vs Duterte in Senate, Ombudsman

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Human Rights Commission (CHR) chairperson Etta Rosales will soon lodge formal complaints against Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for his murder threats against smugglers.

"Pinari-research ko lang 'yong Legal Investigation Office ng CHR para gumawa sila ng maayos na analysis and on the basis of this analysis, I will write my letter to the DILG, to the Senate," Rosales said Thursday in an interview with dzMM.

"Then kung makikita na namin 'yung enough evidence, then we will write a letter to the Ombudsman," she added.

Rosales has earlier rebuked Duterte for his behavior during the Senate panel hearing on the country's rampant illegal rice trade attended by businessman Davidson Bangayan, believed to be the same person as alleged smuggling magnate David Tan.

Duterte said that he would "gladly kill" Bangayan for his country if he hears that the alleged rice smuggler would enter his city.

Rosales insists that Duterte has the wrong solutions to problems.

"Ang kanilang solusyon sa problema you take the law in your own hands tapos binabalewala mo 'yung due process," Rosales said.

She also believes the popular local official is negatively influencing those who work in government and law enforcement.

"Nagse-send siya ng signal, inuudyok niya 'yung government employees lalo 'yung nasa ilalim ng kanyang jurisdiction, mga law enforcers, na pwede palang gawin ito," she said.
