Cold weather can trigger heart attack, stroke – PHA

Sheila Crisostomo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A cardiologist from the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) yesterday warned that cold weather could trigger heart attack and stroke.

In an interview, PHA fellow Willie Ong said that cold weather could be risky primarily to those who already have a “compromised” health condition.

“It is believed that low temperature may increase platelet aggregation and blood viscosity and promotes thrombosis and clot formation. The arteries may also constrict with exposure to very cold temperatures,” he said.

Ong also said that low temperatures could thicken the blood and constrict arteries, thus elevating blood pressure.

“Those changes are bad for your heart, leaving you prone to a heart attack. If you have heart disease or are over 50 years old, do not overexert yourself during cold weather,” he warned.

Ong also posted in his Twitter account @DocWillieOng that the public should watch out for flu and fever, heart attack, and increased arthritis pain during cold weather.

He explained that during the cold season, the flu causing viruses are stronger and could easily be spread to others through coughing and sneezing and through objects touched by an infected individual. The virus could survive outside of a host-body for 24 hours.

“Keep four feet distance from the sick. Use 70 percent alcohol for hands. Maintain a clean surrounding... Wear jacket. Wear socks/gloves if needed,” he added.

He urged those who already have fever to drink lots of water and stay at home to avoid infecting others, and advised the public to have flu vaccine annually.
