No TRO on candidates’ airtime limits
MANILA, Philippines - Barely two months before the May 13 elections, the Supreme Court (SC) has yet to rule on airtime limits imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on campaign advertisements.
Not even an intervention from re-electionist Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano could convince the high court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the assailed Comelec rule.
In a regular session yesterday, SC magistrates did not resolve the prayer for TRO. They only granted Cayetano’s intervention plea, and allowed the consolidation of the new petition with the earlier petitions filed by broadcast giants GMA Network Corp. and ABC Development Corp., parent company of TV5.
“There was no action on TRO plea. The Office of the Solicitor General is directed to comment (on the new petition) in five days,†SC spokesman Theodore Te told reporters in a text message.
