100 human traffickers convicted
MANILA, Philippines - A task force against human trafficking has prosecuted and convicted 100 people, including government officials, last year.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima last week that said support from the private sector and international partners has buoyed the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT).
The enemy is no match for the determination, courage and commitment against human trafficking, she added.
De Lima is IACAT chair.
Justice Undersecretary Jose Vicente Salazar, IACAT head, said the launching of the Second National Strategic Action Plan Against Trafficking in Persons for 2012-2016 in December 2012 had boosted the teamwork among IACAT member-agencies.
The international ties of IACAT were also strengthened through collaboration and cooperation, he added.
Salazar said other key officials of IACAT expressed confidence that the forces on the ground are committed and determined to set this clear strategy in motion.
Their understanding of the nature and forms of human trafficking is crucial to the role of law enforcement in the fight against perpetrators, he added.
