Workers and their families should have more cash assistance if the Enhanced Community Quarantine in Metro Manila and nearby provinces is extended, Associated Labor Unions - Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, said.

"Without these additional cash assistance and food pack dole-outs for another week of ECQ, government will have difficulty in keeping them within the bubble," the group says, adding delays in distribution of the aid, which is capped at P4,000 per household, has made the lockdown diffocult for many as it is.

"The working poor are getting desperate with the extreme poverty ravaging their families during the lockdown period. Without another round of cash assistance during another week of lockdown, desperate workers would now take the great risk of foraging for food despite the ferocious and highly infectious coronavirus disease."

He says families should be compensated for how much they would have earned had there been no lockdown. "P10,000 in financial aid for each family now!" he also says.

Joey Concepcion, the presidential adviser for entrepreneurship, welcomes the timing of the reiterated lockdown, noting the economic activity is more muted during Holy Week.

In a news release, Concepcion says the plan should give the already burdened healthcare system a break.

He adds that the lockdown stresses the need to roll out the vaccination program more smoothly. "We really need these vaccines to come in. Hopefully, there will be no delays in the arrival of the vaccines, particularly with Novavax and Covaxin which we are helping our private sector access," Concepcion says.

Covaxin, developed in India, has already applied for emergency use authorization in the Philippines. Novavax's application, meanwhile, is still pending.

"As for AstraZeneca, expect no delays, we should get the arrival schedules soon. Moderna from the Razon group will be coming in the 3rd and 4th quarter," Concepcion says.

What's going to happen under the fresh lockdown?

  • House-to-house contact tracing.
  • No suspension of transportation, but will operate at limited capacity.
  • Longer curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • No dine-in at restaurants.
  • No mass gatherings of more than 10 people.

The reimposed ECQ supersedes the earlier proclaimed "NCR+ bubble," which added restrictions to the more relaxed GCQ.
