The Miss Universe Organization clarifies that it was the Philippines' Gazini Ganados who was the winner of the national costume portion of the prestigious pageant earlier.

Host Steve Harvey earlier announced Ganados as the winner and her image was momentarily flashed onscreen, but it was already Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon who was on stage to receive the accolade.

"@IAmSteveHarvey had it right: Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the #MissUniverse2019. National Costume competition! Congratulations, Gazini," the pageant organizers write in a tweet. Ganados, however, already missed the chance to receive the award during the live broadcast.

"I’ve always believed as women, we have the power to redefine our generation. When we raise our voices together, the words women power become more than just a phrase, they become a movement," says Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray from the Philippines, in a voiceover as she made her final walk moments before the crowning of the new Miss Universe queen.

She walks in a Mak Tumang gown inspired by the Philippine Eagle's point of view as it soars over the Philippines' turquoise seas, the designer explains in an Instagram story.

"Thank you God. I lift everything up to glorify and honor you. As I close this chapter, I do so with a grateful heart. To everyone with a dream, know that your dreams are valid and on your path you are never denied and only directed," Gray adds.

South Africa's Zozibini Tunzi is the new Miss Universe, besting 89 other candidates from around the world. Puerto Rico's Madison Anderson was named the first-runner up while Mexico's Sofía Aragón finished as second runner-up.

For her final statement at the competition, Miss South Africa said:

"I grew up in a world where women who look like me with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful. And I think that  it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected on mine. Thank you."
