The Philippine economy declines by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2020, the Philippine Statistics Authority announces.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Chua says this is the first time real gross domestic product growth fell into negative territory since 1998 during the combined El Niño and the Asian Financial Crisis.

"Our economic growth is showing weaker performance compared to the past two decades. Even so, our priorities are clear: to protect the lives and health of our people," Chua says.

The Philippine Statistics Authority, in a press briefing, says that the economy grows 6.1 percent in fourth quarter while the full-year economic growth in 2018 is at 6.2 percent.

The Philippine economy grows 6.0 percent in the second quarter of 2018, the Philippine Statistics Authority and the National Economic and Development Board says in a briefing.

The growth is slower than the downwardly revised 6.6 percent in the first quarter and the 6.7-percent growth registered in the same period last year.

In a statement on Wednesday, PSA said the country’s gross domestic product had been adjusted to 6.6 percent from 6.8 percent, below the government’s 7-8 percent target range.

“Major contributors to the downward revision were other services, manufacturing, and agriculture and forestry,” the PSA said.

Meanwhile, gross national income and net primary income from the rest of the world were revised to 6.3 percent from 6.4 percent and to 5.0 percent from 4.3 percent, respectively. 

Philippine Statistics Authority announces the full-year economic growh of the Phlippines at 6.8 percent in 2016. The fourth quarter GDP growth was at 6.6 percent.
