Typhoon Saola swept across southern China on Saturday after tearing down trees and smashing windows in Hong Kong, although the megacity avoided a feared direct hit from one of the region's strongest storms in decades.

Tens of millions of people in the densely populated coastal areas of southern China had sheltered indoors on Friday ahead of the storm.

Saola had triggered Hong Kong's highest threat level on Friday evening -- issued only 16 times since World War II -- and registered winds of around 210 kilometres per hour at its peak. — AFP

Tens of millions of people across southern China hunker down Friday as Super Typhoon Saola swept towards the megacities of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, forcing the cancellations of hundreds of flights, shutting business and closing schools.

Packing sustained wind speeds at 210 kilometres (130 miles) per hour as it moved towards Hong Kong, Saola could be one of the most powerful typhoons to hit Guangdong if it makes landfall in the province.

By 11 am (0300 GMT), it was 180 km east-southeast of Hong Kong, where the stock market cancelled trading because of the T8 signal -- the city's third-highest typhoon warning level. — AFP

China issues its highest typhoon warning on Thursday as Super Typhoon Saola (formerly Goring) drew closer to Hong Kong and the mainland's southern coast, with multiple cities delaying the start of the school year as a precaution.

Saola's wind speeds topped 200 kilometres (125 miles) per hour as of 6 pm (1000 GMT) on Thursday, with the storm around 370 kilometres southeast of the Chinese finance hub, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

On Friday, it will bring "heavy squally showers and violent winds", the observatory said, adding that the threat level was expected to be upgraded to "T8" -- the city's third-highest -- early in the morning. — AFP
