Where fashion peeps chill out in style

Leah Puyat - The Philippine Star

A stay at this coastal playground called The Lind is not an abrupt interruption, but rather a part of the continuum of the chic, modern global nomad dynamic lifestyle.

When we descended upon The Lind in Boracay, it was a “workation,” with several shoots planned and a battalion of models, hair and makeup people, photographers, editors and friends, and though we were there ostensibly to work, we still went into laid-back mode. The gleaming white walls and the expansive public spaces and the breathtaking views, of both the beach and the pools in the central courtyard, were all uplifting, a balm for the soul and a treat for the eyes.

On the day we arrived, the vertical garden in the main reception area was unveiled, and of course, it was the backdrop of many an IG shot. Instead of the usual breakfast setup, a bar-height industrial-look long table was laden with a spread of healthy fruits, juices, breads and pastries met us, and amidst the white outdoor furniture was a fun and retro drink stand, reminiscent of a classic ice cream cart, done up in The Lind’s geometric logo. Again, this cart was part of most of our IG posts.

To memorialize our stay, we made a drone video as well as a time-lapse video and a portrait, family-style. But no photo or video could ever capture the entirety of our Lind experience. To shed our weary urban shells, and to be embraced by the sea, sun and air, and then to rest in a cool and contemporary space was like being in the best kind of dream. There was also an unspoken pride that a local chain had finally created a hotel that could define the Boracay experience.

Coast with the most

A daring boutique look that is equal parts quirky and freshly indulgent marks Boracay’s newest and most distinctive destination. The Lind has interiors by Manny Samson and Associates and is the brainchild of the homegrown Scottland Leisure Inc. The Lind hits just that right note of being oriented towards its very special location at the very best part of Station 1 — with both an infinity pool deck and a ballroom with spacious balcony, plus a generous view of the sea and sky. It’s a luxe and yet comfortable world unto itself.

The furniture is fun and funky but, most importantly, cozy and inviting. The dramatic lantern-like poolside lounges and the industrial-type bar in the lobby may be style statements but are also meant for just chilling out without sacrificing style. All the public spaces are strategically designed to enjoy a view, whether it is of nature itself or dramatic architecture.

The Spa is the Lind’s partner and so after all the swimming, sunning and partying, there is then the option of being pampered and prettified.

“All good hotels tend to lead people to do things they wouldn’t necessarily do at home,” declares Andre Balazs, the hotel and restaurant maverick behind the game-changing The Standard chain, London’s hottest hotspot The Chiltern Firehouse, and the legendary Chateau Marmont in Beverly Hills — hideaway of such rock legends as Jim Morrison of The Doors and pop culture icon Annie Leibovitz, and also the setting of the Sofia Coppola movie titled Somewhere and immortalized in a song by Lana del Rey.

In the right hotel, there must be a balancing act of ease and aspiration: there is the feeling of being at home and yet still away.  So maybe you’re not the type to lounge by an infinity pool with a cocktail in hand as the Boracay sunset blazes around you. Or perhaps, you have never reclined on a swinging bed as you contemplate which pool you will slink into as soon as you have had breakfast with a view of a cool and sleek courtyard. Then again, you may have never cocooned yourself in a millennial version of a tropical bolt-hole, with curvy lighting features against a gray concrete wall. At The Lind, your Boracay holiday is elevated and updated.

“Films and hotels have many aspects that are the same,” observed Godfather director and winemaker Francis Ford Coppola. He made this parallel:   “There is always a big vision, an idea.”

At The Lind, you create the big vision, the big idea, and the stylish stage is already set for you and for your perfect getaway.
