Pressured to pursue music? Ryan Cayabyab on kids following footsteps

MANILA, Philippines — National Artist Ryan Cayabyab revealed that he did not expect that his daughter Cristina and son Antonio will also land in the music industry.

In an interview with Philstar.com, Cayabyab said he thinks that his son and daughter do not feel the pressure because he did not push them to make a career in music.

“I feel that they're not pressured. First of all, we didn't expect them to land in music because we didn't push them. Nagulat nga kami eh,” Cayabyab said.

He narrated how his daughter ended up in music as she graduated summa cum laude in University of the Philippines.

“First my daughter, she was set to take up theater in Ateneo then bago dumating 'yung enrollment sabi niya, 'Can I audition instead in UP College of Music?' Sabi ko, 'Talaga? Gusto mo talaga yan.' She never told us her plan that she wanted to become a musician,” Cayabyab said.

“Well guess what? She graduates summa cum laude in music. She's even much better than the two of us (Ryan and wife). And then now she just finished her masters,” he added.

His son, who graduated with a degree in Communication Arts in Ateneo, auditioned in UP College of Music after a year of graduation.

“Then my son graduated in Ateneo, Com Arts and then after a year 'di niya alam siya pupunta, sabi niya, 'Can I go back to school?' And then he auditioned in UP College of Music. Now he's (in) senior (year) and he loves it. Sabi ko, 'Ba't ngayon mo lang na-decide, dapat noon pa?' Well anyway, like what I've said, everything has its own time,” Mr. C said.

When asked if he thinks his daughter and son feel pressured because of what he achieved in the industry, Cayabyab said he thinks there is no pressure.

“I don't think there's pressure, I hope it's none. But what happens in the house is fun now that everybody talks music, now that everybody can talk about detalye ng music theory,” he shared. — Video by Erwin Cagadas Jr.
