'You cannot impose your faith': Boy Abunda calls out Alvin Aragon, reiterates call for grace
MANILA, Philippines — Television host Boy Abunda called out former actor Alvin Aragon for comments he made regarding the queer community.
To start the February 25 episode of his "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" talk show, Boy recalled that he had on yesterday drag artist Sofia Trazona, daughter of former SexBomb Girls member Izzy Trazona.
Sofia, a transwoman, became a point of discussion a couple of years ago when Izzy publicly said she did not support her child doing drag because it was against her Christian faith.
Despite this, Sofia said on the show that her and Izzy's love for one another would always remain. However, the family re-entered the public eye once again when Alvin, Izzy's husband and Sofia's stepfather, condemned the LGBTQIA community.
Boy shared people have been asking his thoughts on the issue, being one of the most well-known celebrities who identifies as gay, and admitted initially not wanting to engage.
Izzy and Alvin appeared on the show together, where Boy treated them well, as any host should, and opted not to enter a debate about their stances.
The host echoed a letter sent to his team by a Christian pastor, where people should be gracious toward Alvin, noting that many people new to Christianity can be "overly passionate."
Such comments were also made by singer Gary Valenciano who, Boy pointed out, is also a Christian and performed during one of the SexBomb Girls' reunion shows directed by his son Paolo.
"I'd like to be gracious to Alvin because he's coming from a point of faith, kanyang paniniwala [at] totoo ang kanyang paniniwala," Boy continued. "Pero para sa akin, he crossed a line, sumobra siya noong nagpangalan siya ng mga magulang."
Boy was referring to a podcast episode Alvin appeared on and namedropped celebrities Gloc-9, Ian Veneracion, and K Brosas for supposedly failing as parents because they embraced their queer children.
"To me, that was an overstretch, that was wrong, doon sumobra si Alvin [and] I'd like to call him out," Boy said, pointing out that the "StarStruck" alum may be implying his way of parenting is correct compared to those who are raising queer kids.
Many others were affected by Alvin's comments, including Boy himself, who raised a niece who identifies as a lesbian and the host describes as hardworking, quiet, decent and a good person.

"Kaya niyang humarap sa Diyos one day at kayang sabihin naging mabuti siyang tao," Boy shared, which he believes is the "true measure of humanity."
Boy then directly called out Alvin, saying the former actor cannot impose his faith, parenting style, or himself on others, "Wala kang pakialam. Walang puwedeng humusga sa amin at walang puwede magsabi sa amin, not you, not anyone."
The host praised Izzy's beauty and Alvin's fun demeanor when they appeared on his show but that experience shouldn't discount his own thoughts on the subject.
"Pupunta ba kaming impyerno because I am queer, at ang mga magulang na yumayakap sa kanilang mga anak with love and dignity? Hindi, because I believe in a God who is kind, compassionate, all understanding, na makikita ang aking kalooban," Boy stressed.
Boy ended by quoting St. John of the Cross to Alvin, "In the evening of life, we will be judged on love and love alone."
The host then welcomed his guest for the episode, Bela Padilla, who was promoting her upcoming movie "A Special Memory" with Carlo Aquino.
