The whole Pinoy comics community is rejoicing after it has been unveiled that our kababayan Manix Abrera created the cover for Batman The Knight #1, which will be released this month.

We chatted with him one-on-one via Zoom to keep safe from the surge but it was a lengthy heartfelt conversation nonetheless.

The cover Manix fi nished in just one week

Manix’s gig is a global success from our own backyard, thanks to the collaboration of Next Comic Art, Comic Odyssey and Sanctum Sanctorum which realized that Manix’s style suits well with the superhero comics genre. They sent his works to Comics’ Batman editor Ben Abernathy and late in October, Manix got the offer. There’s a catch though, he only had one week to make it happen.

Luckily, despite his busy schedule and daily grind, Manix managed to not have an artist’s block and deliver the cover with flying colors, thanks to his deep appreciation for Batman. “Fan kasi talaga ako ng Batman ever since madami na akong idea, like ang sarap siguro i-drawing ni Batman na ganito, so medyo noong dumating iyong opportunity na ito, mayroon na akong bank ng ideas na pwede ko gawin,” he said.

Manix’s cover is more than what meets the eye. He explained how he incorporated some Easter Egg references in his first work for DC comics.

Manix, like any other artist, has very high regard for his craft. Even though Batman was his subject, he made it clear that he was not willing to compromise his signature talent. Gladly, his work and genius were appreciated as is.

This project is set to be released this month, but a lot more offers have poured in Manix’s way since the cover was unveiled at the end of December.

He considers himself very fortunate to have done this masterpiece in the comfort of his home as well and hoped that more artists will be given opportunities the way he has his.

Asked if there is one nugget of wisdom he would like to share to fellow artists, he said, “Tuwing gumagawa ako ng comics, hindi ko iniisip na may ibang titingin nito or ibang magbabasa kasi sobrang na-pre-pressure ako sa ganon, diko kaya na may ganong pressure. So, ‘pag gumagawa ako, iniisip ko ako lang dapat matuwa, yun ang style ko, bonus na lang lahat if magustuhan ng ibang tao.”
