What real beauty means for La Vida Lena stars
Cast members of ABS-CBN’s revenge drama La Vida Lena each have their own definition of what real beauty is as discussed during the digital press conference held last week.
With the tagline “Rarampa na ang karma!,” the series touches on what it means to be beautiful inside out, the concept of family, love and revenge as well. Directors Jerry Lopez Sineneng and Jojo Saguin narrated that the story revolves around Magda/Lena (played by Erich Gonzales), a simple girl who was ridiculed and belittled because of the big scar on her face. Lena would subsequently seek justice from the people who wronged her.
Erich shared during the press conference that true beauty can be seen and felt in the heart. “Para sa akin, ang tunay na kagandahan ay kung ano ang laman ng iyong puso at kalooban. ‘Yung kabutihan at kababaan ng loob ang tunay na kagandahan ng isang tao.”
Carlo Aquino, who plays Lena’s childhood friend Jordan and fancies her, said “Pwede ikaw yung pinaka-maganda or pinaka-guwapo sa buong mundo pero kung hindi naman maganda yung nasa loob mo, kalooban mo, lalabas at lalabas yun eventually.”
“Ang tunay ng kagandahan, for me, is hindi lang yung panlabas, hindi lang yung nakikita mo dito (referring to face),” added Janice de Belen who portrays Lena’s ally Ramona against the Narcisos.
Agot Isidro as Vanessa Narciso, the main antagonist in the series, also voiced out her opinion, “Kailangan maging maganda rin ang iyong hangarin para sa kapwa, para sa sarili.”
JC de Vera and Raymond Bagatsing, who play Adrian and Lukas Narciso, respectively, stated that being lovely means having a beautiful soul and heart.
Young stars like Sofia Andres who plays Rachel Suarez, and her sister in the show, Danica Ontengco as Allison, said real beauty emanates from inside and out and from the kindness of heart while former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Hasna Cabral as Betchay equates beauty with courage. “Katapangan na maniwala sa iyong kakayanan,” she said.
La Vida Lena cast also includes Malou Crisologo, Renshi de Guzman, Pen Medina, Ruby Ruiz, Kit Thompson, Christian Vasquez and many others.
Furthermore, Erich articulated her role in the show and the reason why she accepted the project.
“Similarity-wise (from her character), lahat naman tayo siguro marunong magmahal. Nasaktan na rin tayo sa buhay natin, di naman yun maiiwasan,” as she reflected on her character. “But this is the challenge for me every time I make a project — how I can separate my true self from the character that I portray.”
Luckily, the team she worked with helped her prepare and deliver the role properly. “Wala naman pong impossible kung lahat naman tulungan. Sila direk, mga kasama ko po dito, as in tulungan po talaga. As in, walang ‘Sige bahala ka na diyan.’ Kami po, tulong — tulong lahat dito.”
On a personal note, Erich answered “not yet” when she was asked if she has ever been “ruthless” to fight for life and love. She explained, “Ako personally, kahit anong mangyari sa anong sitwayson, lagi kong pinipiling maging mabuti na lang. At tsaka intindihin na lang yung ibang tao siguro. Let’s just be kind na lang lagi. Bahala na si God.”
Erich cited the notable storyline and plot as her reasons for saying yes to the project. “When they presented the story, nagustuhan ko talaga siya because it’s something I’ve never done before. ‘Yung story niya, hindi lang siya basta revenge, punong-puno siya ng puso. Nandun talaga yung core nating mga Pilipino tungkol sa pamilya….mahusay din ang mga kasama natin sa project na ito so I said yes right away.”
She also thanked ABS-CBN and Dreamscape Entertainment for giving her the opportunity to become the lead in the teleserye.
The full series of La Vida Lena will premiere via Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, TV5 and The Filipino Channel on June 28, 10 p.m.
