MANILA, Philippines — Jose Manalo is one reliable comedian. Pinoys from up north to down south, mula Aparri hanggang Jolo, as a line from the Eat, Bulaga song goes, can attest to it. They laugh with him and laugh at him.

His usual playgrounds are noontime variety, movies, sitcoms, comedy bars and game shows. Jose is showcasing his brand of comedy, too, in the reality game show, Catch Me Out Philippines, which premieres tonight at 7:15 on GMA 7 and airs Saturdays thereafter.

Jose, the host takes on the challenge to help audiences identify the amateur between two contestants, who will bring their A game in convincing everyone that they are professional performers.

“’Yung trabaho kasi ‘di ko (ito) pinagsasawaan (I don’t get tired of working),” said Jose when asked about sustaining his enthusiasm in doing comedy during a recent media call. “Gusto natin magpasaya, gusto namin na lagi kayong masaya (We want to entertain and make everyone happy)… Kahit sinong performer, kapag humarap (na) yan sa camera, yung pagod nawawala (Once a performer is in front of the camera, the feeling of tiredness disappears),” he added.

With that, the audience is Jose’s source of strength and inspiration to continue on with his craft and learn more new tricks. It makes his talent spot-on and himself relevant. “Ako’y napaka-tamad mag-aral nung ako ay bata, ngayon natuto akong mag-aral (I was a lazy student then. But now I see the importance of studying one’s craft).”

Jose shared that as a host he also needs to build rapport with people behind the camera. He makes an effort to reach out to them. By doing so, the work atmosphere becomes conducive to creative collaboration and creates a safe, fun place for all.

What he looks forward to are the new comedy approach or concept and collaborators any show offers him. He would also ask himself this: “Tatayo ba ako ng ako lang? Pero hindi. So kailangan may kasama pa rin ako. (Will I be able to do it alone? No, I won’t. I need partners to present the show).”

Joining him in Catch Me Out Philippines are Kakai Bautista and Derrick Monasterio as Celebrity Spotters. The three, along with 10 Celebrity Catchers, will engage in some banter to again help audiences name the amateur. But the “great pretender” or “great performer” wins the game.

“We have the task, aside from Kuya Jose, to identify and give hints to (Celebrity) Catchers and audiences who among the contestants is the amateur,” said Kakai, who considers the work challenging since the contestants are very good at acting as professional performers. “They imbibed their character as a performer, being trained in a particular skill.” she added, “They got training, too.” So it could blur the line that separates the real talent from the novice.

Like Kakai, Derrick will bank on his experiences as an up-and-coming-turned-Kapuso star.

“For example, the actor is dancing, even if it is far from (what I do like singing and acting), makikita (ko) pa rin kahit paano (if he is an amateur or not) like (through his) mannerisms before the performance and (some signs of) nervousness,” he said.

Derrick knows the tell-tale signs because he was once a newbie who had his own fair share of auditioning and training. The caveat is: These amateurs could take their training seriously and come on stage with confidence and command.

In each episode, Catch Me Out Philippines promises to be fun to watch. Derrick said the viewers will get to know him, Kakai and Jose more as the reality (talent) game content shows the natural side of them, beyond the characters they play on TV and in film. He felt that the audience will have a good time.

Then, it’s time to say: Let the fun talent guessing game begin.

(Directed by Rico Gutierrez, Catch Me Out Philippines also airs Sundays on GMA Pinoy TV.)
