MANILA, Philippines — Kapuso actress Janine Gutierrez was surprised that her film “Dagsin” has been shortlisted as a possible Philippine entry to the International Film Feature Category of the Oscars.

In an exclusive interview with Philstar.com during the "TRESemme Runway Ready 2019: Color The Runway" event on Thursday, Janine said she did not expect that the movie will be shortlisted in the Oscars, especially because it was shown three years ago.

“I was so surprised. We did that (film) three years ago, so it’s like ‘Totoo ba 'to?’ Parang dumadami na 'yung nagpo-pos so tinext ko 'yung producer namin. I saw the news, they were so surprise also," shared Janine, who now sports a strawberry-colored hair, which she said is made "glowing and vibrant thanks to (the new) Ttresemme Pro Color Series."

"Even to be considered is such a blessing and surprise so ayon nakakatuwa lang kasi hindi naman namin ever inasahan na masasali 'yung movie na 'yon sa anything Oscars-related,” she added.

A 2016 Cinemalaya Film Festival entry, “Dagsin” was the first film of director Atom Magadia, with screenplay by his wife Anne. It tells the story of Justino (played by Tommy Abuel), World War II hero and Death March survivor who lost his legs, and as such, became an atheist.

When his wife, Corazon (portrayed by Marita Zobel) died, Justino yearned to believe in life after death to be with her. As such, he looked for ways to hold on to the memory of his wife, including reading her diaries, from which he unearths a Pandora's Box of secrets.

"While the Philippines has been submitting movies in the foreign film Oscar category (now known as international feature film) since its inception in 1956, the country has yet to win," US-based news site The Hollywood Reporter said in a report.

Meanwhile, Janine said that she is doing a movie with Kapamilya actor Paulo Avelino.

“Actually I’m starting a movie with Paulo Avelino. Ang title niya, ‘If We Don’t Make It.’ I guess it’s a crossover kasi nga; he’s from channel 2 and I’m from 7. Excited ako. I’ve done it before with Enchong sa 'Elise' and it’s always fun to work with people that you wouldn’t normally get to work with,” Janine said.
