MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos and those with Filipino descent are among the nominees for key categories at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, which were announced Thursday in Beverly Hills. 

The awarding ceremony will take place on January 6, also in Beverly Hills.

Among those nominated are "Black Panther" for Best Film, drama category. One of the film’s lead stars, Lupita Nyong’o, reportedly learned Filipino martial arts for the fight scenes. One of Marvel’s illustrators, Anthony Francisco, who grew up in the Philippines, confirmed in an interview with Buzzfeed that some costumes in the film have been inspired by Filipino artifacts.

Competing against “Black Panther” in the same category is "A Star Is Born,” with Filipino-American Matthew Libatique as cinematographer.

Meanwhile, nominated for Best Film in a musical or comedy is "Crazy Rich Asians," which boasts of an all-Asian cast, including Filipino-American comedian Nico Santos and Filipina actress and TV host Kris Aquino.

In the TV category, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” led the nominations with four, including Best Limited Series or TV Movie, and Best Actor for Limited Series or TV Movie for Filipino-American actor Darren Criss, who recently received an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead in a Limited Series or Movie for the same role.
