MANILA, Philippines — Veteran singer Rico J. Puno, known for his hit songs "Kapalaran," "May Bukas Pa" and "Magkasuyo Buong Gabi," among others, passed away due to heart attack at 1:56 this morning. He was 65.

His manager of 37 years, Norma Japatina, said the OPM legend went for a regular checkup at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bonifacio Global City last Sunday, October 28, and was advvised by his doctor to stay.  He had a pacemaker.

Japitana, remembers Rico J, who is known for his ribald jokes on stage, as a generous man.

“He called up to greet me on my birthday this month,” she recalled in an interview with Philstar.com

The singer, she added, was in high spirits and did not sound like he was in pain.

Singer-composer Ogie Alcasid said in is Facebook post that Rico was “the reason why I wanted to be a singer.”

“His voice, his charm, wit and entertaiment style wowed millions of OPM fans all ove the world,” Ogie added.

Lea Salonga posted,”Rest in Peace, Rico J. Puno. Your distinctive voice that lent itself so much of of my childhood will not be forgotten.”

Jenine Desiderio recalled how Rico J would give her pieces of advice when she was just starting in the music industry.

“Thank you for making me a part of your countless shows,” she said. 

Rico J. is survived by his wife Doris and children Tosca, Rox, Erica and Doki.  

His remains lie in Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes Park, Makati.
