The ‘misunderstood’ Diego

His parents are good friends of mine and it’s always different when you talk to someone who, even before this boy was born, you have this feeling that you have known him. I am talking about Diego Loyzaga who found himself embroiled in ugly situations in the past. But in spite of all the hullabaloos, Diego remains strong.

Diego was seemingly “misjudged” reportedly due to his anger issues. He admitted about feeling angry at some point. But come to think of it, who doesn’t get angry?

“I’m a human being. If there is an action, there will always be a reaction,” he said. “If there is something that got me angry, there’s a reason why. It’s not anything beyond the normal; all of us get angry at times.”

Did he often feel misunderstood?

“Yes, in a way because we are in an industry where the limelight is on us, everyone sees our every action so if you get mad, it can be looked at in many different ways — it can be judged right away or it can be seen as “super nega (negative)” agad — and we are not in a position where we can always defend ourselves.”

Away from the public eye, Diego is a sweet, loving guy, especially to his dear mom Teresa Loyzaga. In fact, he no longer let her go back to Australia where they stayed for several years. “I told her that she has to stay here with me because we can make a life here and we can support each other. I really said that I need her here with me.”

Not many know that he has a very good relationship with his sisters Angelina, Samantha and Chesca, and his Tita Sunshine Cruz. The four are half-siblings who share a dad, Cesar Montano. Diego is Cesar’s son from Teresa, while the three girls are from Cesar’s marriage to Sunshine.

“Ever since naman we’re always very close, at my dad’s house pa magkakasama kami doon,” he stressed. “Hindi naman matagal nawala ‘yung communication between me and my sisters and we still always find the time.”

In one of his Instagram posts, Diego was shown with Angelina, after their Araneta Coliseum show, with a caption, “…I’m one proud kuya, always gonna be here to help you and guide you if and when you need me…”

The young actor added in jest that whoever attempts to court his sister, whom he fondly calls Buching, will have to meet up with him first. Kidding aside, Diego said that he’s just protective of them. “Honestly, even though I don’t see them as much as I would like to, I still care for them. I’m still their kuya. I’ve always wanted a younger brother or sister and I have three, so why not take care of what you have. And what’s perfect is my mom and Tita Shine are great friends, too.”

Diego, on the other hand, showed he’s a good sport when he gamely took the Truth or Dare challenge in Tonight with Boy Abunda. He obliged to kiss a random girl in the audience and willingly did 10 push-ups with a clap as a bonus in the Dare test. He was equally game answering the Truth questions. Read on.

“We were at a beach party then I went cliff-diving, s’yempre pasikat. I was only in trunks but when I jumped in the water, napunit as if I had no shorts.”

“I won’t even say it’s hidden — Alexis Ren. Sa local, well, I already said this in 2014, Liza Soberano. I mean, she’s Darna, right? But I have respect for Quen (Enrique Gil). Taga-hanga lang talaga ako ni Liza.”
