K Brosas dares detractors to watch her 18K concert

The singer-comedienne recalled years ago that someone belittled her by saying she is just a sing-along talent, or something to that effect

MANILA, Philippines — Comedienne-singer K Brosas, even with her amiable personality and noticeable talent, is aware that she has her own detractors. Somehow it is a reality that pushed her up to great heights beyond what many people would have expected.

A solo concert with big-name guests to celebrate her 18th anniversary in showbiz is obviously a knockout punch for those not believing in her capabilities as an entertainer. She has really made it big-time, period.

The concert wittily dubbed 18K is scheduled April 28 at the Kia Theater, Araneta Center, Quezon City. It is a show to be presented by Cornerstone Concerts and featuring a pool of powerhouse cameos, namely, Pooh, Chokoleit, Kyla, Angeline Quinto, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Jaya and Regine Velasquez.

“Sana mga friends ko sa showbiz pumunta lahat. Pati mga detractors ko, yung mga hindi naniniwala na kaya kong gumawa ng ganito kalaking show,” shared K with a meaningful smile.

To stress her point, she recalled years ago that someone belittled her by saying she is just a sing-along talent, or something to that effect. To which she bluntly stated, “It’s not a fact. Nag-jazz bar po ako. Nag-music lounge ako with violin. I’ve been singing in a band.”

Certainly true, the public got aware of her at the beginning of the new millennium as main voice of K and The Boxers behind the hit song Sasakyan Kita. And she’s back in the hit parade with her very first single Natatawa Ako under Star Music. Her equally strong version of the Aegis hit has been in the radio airwaves for months now, with a hilarious music video now up online (https://youtu.be/c-MtlPFhIlU) and airing on MYX channel.

18K will be directed by John Prats, his second directorial job after the success of Tagpuan featuring Moira dela Torre. He said of K, “Sobrang hands on siya sa concert na ito. It’s going to be 50 percent performance and 50 percent comedy. I can’t wait to rehearse.”

By observation, K is one of the few women in local showbiz who can deliver a jaw-dropping punchline and a heartfelt belting of a classic ‘80s song quickly one after the other, almost without having to pause for momentum.

The years between her first breakout hit and the new one had been a busy ride that harnessed her skill as singer, host, actress and author.

She hosted programs like Bitoy’s Funniest Videos, Extra Challenge and Eat Bulaga. She acted in teleseryes My Girl, Idol, Maria La Del Barrio and Lovers In Paris. At the beginning of this decade, she became a regular co-host in an ABS-CBN noontime show. She was also tapped as a resident judge on TV5’s Talentadong Pinoy in 2011.

On the big screen she appeared in Star Cinema’s Tenement 2, Tanging Pamilya, Unofficially Yours, The Mistress, Call Center Girl and Northern Lights: A Journey To Love under Regal Films, Star Cinema and Spring Films.

K is currently one of the regular hurados in It’s Showtime’s Tawag Ng Tanghalan, in the roster for three seasons now.

“Late ako nag-start sa showbiz at matagal akong naka-menor,” she humbly thought, adding she has “mixed emotions of pressure and excitement” for her 18K concert that will also feature her daughter Crystal Brosas.

She owed a lot to her former manager Boy Abunda and to her current management, Cornerstone.

Last year, her book K-Sabihan, published by ABS-CBN Publishing, became a bestseller.

Proof of her star power is the glaring truth that as of this writing, 18K is “almost sold out.”
