MANILA, Philippines – The AlDub phenomenon has gone international.

“Eat Bulaga” fans went into frenzy when “Meteor Garden” star Barbie Xu on Monday took to Twitter to ask her more than 60,000 followers what AlDub is.

Fans of AlDub—the portmanteau of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza’s Yaya Dub, the lead characters of “Eat Bulaga’s” popular “Kalyeserte” segment—immediately answered the Taiwanese star’s query.

Some netizens even compared AlDub to Dao Ming Si (played by Jerry Yan)and Shancai (played by Barbie Xu), the characters in the popular drama “Meteor Garden.”

“Meteor Garden” is a 2001 Taiwanese show which first aired in the Philippines in 2003 on ABS-CBN and instantly became a phenomenon in the country.

Even entertainment reporters—like GMA-7’s Aubrey Carampel—took to Twitter to respond to Barbie.

Barbie later responded to a follower and said she thought AlDub is “a pet.”

The AlDub phenomenon also reached Bryan White, the artist behind the song “God Gave Me You.” The 1999 song is heavily used as music on the “Kalyeserye” segment. The American country singer even hinted on the possibility of going to the Philippines for AlDub.

The curiosity about AlDub outside the country should not come as a surprise. #AlDubMostAwaitedDate, the designated hashtag for the September 19 “Kalyeserye” segment, amassed over 11 million tweets in 24 hours, making it a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. — Chuck Smith
