Solenn Heussaff: Independence keeps me sane

MANILA, Philippines – Solenn Heussaff finds independence a necessity in her life as an actress.

Aside from believing that she serves as a role model to her fans, this reminds her of her life outside showbiz.

“It brings me back to my roots,” she explained in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s what brings me out of that environment of showbiz. I do my groceries alone. I don’t have maids at home, ganyan. It helps me stay sane.”

Before she entered showbiz, Solenn studied and worked abroad where she lived alone. She admits it was scary at first. But once a person decides to live alone, Solenn shared, it can one’s life.

“I think you’ll learn a lot about yourself. About what you can do, capabilities mo,” she replied when asked how a person's life will change with independence. "It also makes you wary of who to trust, who to surround yourself. You get to adapt in different real life situations."

These characteristics are similar with her character Khai in her upcoming film “Flotsam,” directed by Jay Abello.

The film is about different kinds of love, and also serves as a promotion of their film’s location which is La Union.

“It’s a very fun, light movie,” said Solenn about the film. “It promotes the beauty of La Union and to encourage people also to get out of the city. Kasi sometimes you get caught up with your everyday work and you don’t get to focus on yourself sometimes.”

“It’s a movie that revolves around different kinds of love. You have the young love, broken love, lost love, confused love. So it’s a very, very nice story, very light,” she added.

After doing the film, she included La Union on her list of top places that everyone should visit in the country. She admired the beauty and people in the place.

“It’s really clean, there’s a long, huge beach. The people are very friendly, very talkative na when you talk to them they’ll take the time and talk to you. It’s also very safe,” she said.

Soleen has been doing more film projects than TV shows in the past few years. Among her recent film projects include "Da Possessed," "Mumbai Love" and "Tiyanak."

Her last TV show was GMA-7’s 2014 primetime history-series “Ilustrado.”

“It’s not that I’m picky, hindi naman ako talaga picky,” she explained. “Every time I get a script, lagi ako interested kasi I’m learning from everything. Sa TV lang medyo mahirap sa akin kasi ‘yong mga script minsan on the day of shoot dumadating. Hindi ko pa ma-memorize ‘yong Tagalog nang gano’n kabilis."

“So sa movie dumadating agad ang script, so kahit maraming Tagalog walang problema kasi I have time to learn it. So I prefer doing films,” she concluded.

Solenn’s film “Flotsam’s” target showing is October this year.
