Rocky blasts from the past

- Philip Cu-Unjieng - The Philippine Star

The two recording artists today may have peaked in their careers earlier in this century, but are still making viable and exciting music. Alanis Morissette’s new CD is a collection of fresh self-penned compositions, while Incubus checks in with an album that celebrates its 20th year as a band.

Alanis Morissette — Havoc and Bright Lights (Sony Music). Yes, this may be eons away from her Jagged Pill days, but you can't fault Alanis for evolving and being happy to compose and record songs that are relevant to her today. She can still pack a mean punch, as with angry songs like Woman Down (which attacks misogynists) and Celebrity (self-explanatory). What surprises are songs like ’Til You, Empathy and Receive, which are downright lyrical and soothing without losing substance. Guardian and Edge of Evolution herald more mature lyrics and impeccable songwriting skills, as does Win and Win. A strong set of songs that should please her old fans, and find her new ones.

Incubus — HQ Live (Sony Music). In 2011, Incubus celebrated its anniversary, booked an LA art gallery and proceeded to play six consecutive nights to an audience of fans and friends. Intimate to the max, this CD/DVD release showcases just how exhilarating musically these six nights were. The band has always been in constant flux, not simply relying on replicating the music that first bought Incubus’ fame, and this CD exhibits how the band can still play the “old music,” while proving the appeal of its new sound. I loved the versions of Drive, Promises, Promises, and on the DVD, Isadore. This one is for all those who took to the band at some point in its two decades.
