FUNFARE - Ricky Lo -

Curtain-raisers:

Here for the holidays are Genesis (a.k.a. Patricia Javier) and her son Robert Walcher IV. Following anytime now is Patricia’s husband, chiropractor Robert Walcher III, who has remained at their home in San Diego, California, putting finishing touches to the repairs of portions of their house destroyed by the recent wildfires.

Global Gateway Productions is looking for gay singers for a musical play to be staged early next year. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, 1 to 6 p.m., at J&G Rehearsal Studio, #56 Dona Hemady  St. corner 8th St., New Manila. Applicants must bring their resume, photos, and Minus One of a fast and slow song.

Could it be true that Mo Twister was suspended by the KBP (Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas) for, among other reasons, asking Sen. Chiz Escudero a “below-the-belt” question — yes, literally (because it had something to do with, uh, “size”)? Sen. Chiz was put on the hot chair in the “40 Forbidden Questions” portion of Mo’s controversial radio program.

Congratulations to Korina Sanchez, said to be a “First Lady material” (do you wonder why?), for having been voted the most admired female TV personality in the 2007 Anak TV Seal awards. Personally, I admire Korina for her guts in discussing/dissecting current issues without fear or favor, a no-holds-barred style that often gets her in hot water.

Tirador competes at Marrakesh Fest

Congratulations, too, to Brillante “Dante” Mendoza whose film, Tirador (Slingshot), is competing for the Etoile D’Or (Golden Star) award, the top prize at the ongoing (7th) Marrakesh Film Festival in Morocco.

A glimpse into the lives of small-time crooks who operate in Quiapo during the Holy Week, Tirador is also being considered for the Jury Prize as well as the Best Actor and Best Actress plums.

Dante has been busy in the festival circuit. His other film, Foster Child, already won three awards in differtent international film festivals, including the Best Actress award for Cherrie Pie Picache in New Delhi, the Special Jury Award in Eurasia (Kazakhstan) and the Prize for Fiction at the recent International Environmental Film festival in Paris. Set for a threatrical release in France in February next year, Foster Child has also been invited to compete for the Golden Lady Harimaguada Award at the Las Palmas International Film  Festival in Spain, also in February next year.

Guests of honor at the opening of the Marrakesh Filmfest’s gala opening last Friday were Martin Scorcese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Scorcese, who has made three films with DiCaprio (Gangs of New York, Aviator and The Departed), handed DiCaprio the festival’s top award in recognition of his achievements so far, saying, “He’s always working till he breaks through the psychological depth of the character he has to play.”

The father in Jun de Leon

Jun de Leon is known in industry circles as a top photographer with more than 30 years of creative and innovative expertise in the field. His photographs alone speak volumes yet for his latest book, called Our Father, the famous lensman’s personal side that is rarely explored, or at least not so much publicized, is captured—his being a father.

Our Father is a dream come true for Jun, a project that was 19 years in the making. It was first conceived when the photographer was separated from his then five-year-old daughter Nina, the event he described in the book’s introduction as, “Nothing in the world, not even the growing recognition of my identity as a photographer could quell the overwhelming pain of separation.”

Fast forward to the present, Jun is in a new light, connected to his children and savoring the love of his family. Call it serendipitous timing also that this renewed path opened up the opportunity to meet supportive partners in Creo Publishing’s RJ and Liv Esteban, and Joel Santos, Our Father publishers. Now, the father-photographer’s gift to fellow fathers that celebrate their unique yet influential love to their children comes in a thick 144-page, hardbound book with an audio CD containing a song performed by Martin Nievera and arranged by Louie Ocampo. Our Father features 62 inspiring fathers from different professions and backgrounds, their lives magnified through the lens of the ace photographer and their exemplary role as a parent revealed by their children through heartwarming essays and poems.

Among the celebeities featured are Aga Muhlach (“He constantly seizes the moment to impart values to Atasha and Andres so they grow up confident, independent, and equipped to be the best they can be,” relates his wife Charlene Gonzalez) and Martin Nievera (“Being with dad is always loads of fun,” say his sons Robin and Ram) , or as children sharing vignettes of wisdom learned from their dads like Kris Aquino (“I will always be in awe of my father’s remarkable intelligence, his vision, his integrity and courage.”) and Angel Locsin (“Even without his sight, he relies on his wit and inner strength to get through struggles”).

Other personalities included in Our Father are: Frank Alba, Butch Albert, Edgar Ang, Joey Antonio, Jaime Ayala, Senen Bacani, Ruben Bangayan, Andy Bautista, Sonny Belmonte, Enrique Benedicto, Ely Buendia, Kenneth Cobonpue, Joey Concepcion, RC Constantino, FF Cruz, Philip Cu-Unjieng, Art de Castro, Freddie Dy, Lauren Dyogi, Patxi Elizalde, Chiz Escudero, RJ Esteban, Bayani Fernando, Mark Gan, David Guerrero, Juan Gullem, Atom Henares, Robert Ho, Roland Hortaleza, Butch Jimenez, Johnlu Koa, Michel Lhuillier, Samie Lim, Gabby Lopez, Guillermo Luchangco, Dennis Manzano, Tony Meloto, Kit Narciso, Satur Ocampo, Robin Padilla, Jun Palafox, Cecilio Pedro, Jun Pelaez, Ricardo Po, Alex Prieto, Charlie Rufino, Joel Santos, Wash SyCip, Jesus Tambunting, Lucio Tan, Ato Tanmantiong, Donnie Tantoco, Wig Tysmans, Fred Uytengsu Sr., Gary  Valenciano, Eddie Villanueva, Manny Villar, and Buddy Zamora.

Villar for Dolphy as National Artist

I second the motion of Senate Pres. Manny Villar’s move to confer the National Artist Award Dolphy, “the King of Comedy in recognition of his outstanding achievement and artistic endeavors in the entertainment industry of the country.”

In a letter to Chairman Emily Abrera of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Villar appealed for the conferment of the National Artist Award (Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) to Dolphy (Rodolfo Quizon in real life).

Citing the provision of Proclamation 1001, series of 1972, the governing law of this award, Villar said Dolphy is highly qualified to receive the award.

“Dolphy is an artist who has helped build a sense of Filipino nationhood through motion picture. Dolphy as John, the lead character actor in one of the country’s longest-running TV program John and Marsha, reflects the life of an ordinary Filipino,” Villar said in the letter dated Nov. 7, 2007.

Villar added that Dolphy made an impact on succeeding generations of artists and has distinguished himself by pioneering a mode of creative expression or style. “He brought to people’s attention the good art of vaudeville. His pure artistry is measured by his commanding staying power in the competitive cinema,” he added.

Villar also cited the Lino Brocka classic Ang Tatay Kong Nanay where Dolphy played the role many Filipinos identified with — that of a solo parent in throes of survival.
