Bill seeks autonomy for PUP

Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara is pushing for legislation that would officially give the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) fiscal and institutional autonomy.

Founded in 1904, the PUP is considered the country’s largest state university by student population with over 70,000.

“It is high time that we strengthen the PUP and officially designate it as the ‘National Polytechnic University,’ which will cater to educating and developing the country’s future industry leaders,” Angara said.

In its website, PUP reported having over 2,000 full-time and part-time faculty members, more than 1,000 employees, and 22 branches and campuses and having the lowest tuition among higher education institutions in the country. Its main campus is located in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Angara has filed Senate Bill 2037, which seeks to strengthen the PUP as an institution and solidify its position as one of the country’s premier state universities.
