Omega fighters victorious in opening show
CEBU, Philippines — WBC ranked No.9 light flyweight Ronnie Mark “Thunder” Vicelles and featherweight contender Pete Apolinar led a clean sweep by the Omega Gym fighters in the first event of Omega Sports Promotions this year billed as “Kumbati 8 and 9” staged behind closed doors last Saturday at the IPI Sports and Recreational Complex in Mandaue City.
Vicelles knocked out Boholano journeyman Richard Rosales at the 2:49 mark of round four to extend his unbeaten streak to 13-0 now spiked with seven victories inside the distance.
His stablemate Apolinar hammered his way to a well-deserved unanimous decision win over Juanito Paredes of Iloilo City with the scores of 99-91 twice and 98-92 to improve his record to 14-1 packed with 8KOs.
On the other hand, three-time world title challenger “King” Arthur Villanueva and former Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga both made a triumphant ring comeback.
Villanueva (33-4-1, 18KOs), who last saw action in July 2019, edged Bryan Tamayo of Malabon by unanimous verdict with uniform scores of 59-55 in their six-round super bantamweight duel, while Barriga (10-1, 2KOs) stopped Junuel Lacar at the end of the fourth round in his first bout in 27 months.
In other results, Tomjone Magubat pulled off a fourth round TKO win over Ryan Maano, Regie Suganob flattened Paolo Sy for good at 22 seconds in round four, while Benny Canete and Carlo Bacaro both prevailed by unanimous decision over Reycar Auxilo and Allan Villanueva, respectively.
Meanwhile, the match between Tagbilaran City’s Rodel Suganob and Manila’s Luiz Borjie ended in a majority draw.
