Omega’s first boxing show of the year rolls on today

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The undefeated WBC No.9 light flyweight contender Mark “Thunder” Vicelles (12-0, 6KOs) and featherweight prospect Pete Apolinar (13-1, 8KOs) take centerstage as Omega Sports Promotions presents its first boxing event of the year with back-to-back cards today at the IPI Sports and Recreational Complex in Mandaue City.

Vicelles, who scored a spectacular fourth round stoppage of Junuel Lacar during the pro boxing restart at the height of the pandemic in October last year, will battle GenSan’s Arnold Garde in a non-title bout scheduled for 10 rounds topbilling the “Kumbati 8” show starting at 1 pm.

The rest of the matches pit Tagbilaran City’s Rodel Suganob and Regie Suganob against Manila’s Luiz Borjie and Paolo Sy, respectively, and Omega Gym’s Franco Serafica and Tomjone Mangubat versus Mark Rotilles of Cebu and Ryan Maano of Tuburan.

Apolinar, on the other hand, will slug it out with Juanito Paredes of Iloilo City in the main attraction of “Kumbati 9” that also features three-time world title challenger “King” Arthur Villanueva (32-4-1, 18KOs) and former Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga (9-1, 1KO). Action begins at 5 pm.

Both Villanueva and Barriga are comebacking fighters.

Villanueva, who last saw action on July 6, 2019 when he lost by six-round technical decision to Nordine Oubaali of France in their WBC bantamweight championship duel, will make his ring return against Bryan Tamayo of Malabon in six-round super bantamweight clash.

Barriga comes out of a 27-month hiatus to face Junuel Lacar in a six-round light flyweight duel. Barriga hasn’t fought since suffering his first and only career loss via split decision to American Carlos “Mexicanito” Licona on December 1, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also seeing action are Omega’s Carlo Bacaro and Benny Caneta against Allan Villanueva and Reycar Auxilo.
