Trojans win fifth straight; Machers outclass Bravos
CEBU, Philippines — The Toledo Trojans sustained their hot streak in the inter-division play of the inaugural Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament played last Wednesday night on lichess platform.
Comprised of playing co-team owner Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang, team manager FA Felix Poloyapoy Jr., skipper Bonn Rainauld Tibod, International Master Rico Mascariñas, National Masters Rommel Ganzon and Rogelio Enriquez Jr., Ronald Ganzon, Richard Natividad, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Christopher Tubalado, and Jinky Catulay, the Trojans vanquished the Isabela Knight Raiders, 13.5-7.5, for their fifth victory in a row.
The Trojans, backed up by team owner Engr. Mardee Gacang-De la Peña and Toledo LGU headed by mayor Joie Perales, still have a pending game against the Caloocan Load Manna Knights, one of strongest contenders up North, but safely stayed at fourth in the Southern Conference standings with an 11-7 win-loss record.
On the other hand, the Cebu City Machers of National Master Elwin Retanal, FIDE Master Anthony Makinano, International Arbiter Linky Yap, Mark Mangubat, Cephas Seguisabal, Eduard De la Torre and Marphine Faith Mangubat split their games.
The Machers lost to the Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, 7.5-13.5, but rolled past the Manila Indios Bravos, 11.5-9.5, for their only fourth win in 19 matches.
The other Cebu contenders were not as lucky.
The Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors suffered back-to-back defeats against the San Juan Predators, 5-16, and the Rizal Batch Towers, 9-12, while the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors lost via a 10-11 cliffhanger over the Quezon City Simba’s Tribe.
Lapu-Lapu dropped to 8-11, while Cordova fell to 6-12, still good for eighth spot in the South bracket. — EBV
