Ryan Garcia’s trainer not keen on boxer’s ‘dream fight’ vs Pacquiao

CEBU, Philippines — Renowned Mexican trainer Eddy Reynoso said he is not interested on his boxer Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) fighting against the legendary Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs).

Since scoring a spectacular seventh round knockout of Luke Campbell to wrest the interim WBC lightweight belt last January 2, the undefeated Garcia has been very vocal on his desire to set up a ‘dream fight’ with his idol Pacquiao.

Even though Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter of Garcia, has already doused talks of the rumored bout by declaring that it won’t take place because it is not in their cards, the 22-year-old Garcia stood firm on his intent to lock up horns with Pacquiao, 20 years his senior.

But Reynoso, the 2019 Trainer of the Year who is one of the hottest ring strategists today, thinks otherwise. He doesn’t like the eight-division world champion Pacquiao for his prized ward.

“I really don’t like that fight,” Reynoso told Jake Donovan of boxingscene.com. “Manny Pacquiao has all that experience, it’s a fight at a heavier weight against (a naturally) bigger fighter. But in my role as a teacher, my job is to prepare him for these fights that he and the team accept.”

Instead of Pacquiao, Reynoso said he wants Kingry to go up against the unbeaten two-division world champion Geronta ‘Tank’ Davis (24-0, 23KOs), currently the reigning WBA lightweight titlist.

“The fight I like more is Tank Davis,” said Reynoso, who also trains middleweight star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. “To me, it’s a far more interesting fight. They are at the same weight and their fight can exceed expectations.”

Reynoso believes that the Garcia-Davis showdown could be the biggest fight in boxing.

“They are two of the biggest stars of this new generation. Manny Pacquiao is great but he’s part of a past generation,” Reynoso furthered.  “The young fans of Ryan Garcia and young fans of Gervonta Davis are going to want to see that fight.” — EBV
